Politics

Germany is a democracy. Several parties with different political views stand for election. In the county of Minden-Lübbecke there are elections for the federal parliament (Bundestag) every 4 years, and elections every 5 years for the town and local councils, the county council and the European Parliament. You have to be eighteen to vote in the federal and European elections and sixteen for the local councils (town, county). Citizens of the 27 member countries of the European Union may vote in the European and local elections. Voting is not compulsory; you may also make use of a postal vote. More information about this can be obtained at your local authority in your town or village which organizes elections. If you are entitled to vote you will receive notice in good time. On this card which entitles you to vote you will be told on what date and when and where you can vote, (or where you can apply for a postal vote).

As an immigrant you can also get involved in politics by way of the foreign nationals’ consultant committee. The consultant committee is part of communal self government and is elected directly by immigrants. It deals with all the things that people from a migration background are concerned about and it is their first port of call.
